THE WOES OF DECORATING BIG SPACES

When it comes to designing a space there are already so many different aspects to think about, such as walls, furniture, and style. What happens when you have so much space in a room you just don’t know where to start!?

Have no fear, we know it can be tricky to decorate a big space but today’s tips should help you jumpstart your interior design journey!

All of the classic design principles can also be applied to large spaces. When designing a large space it is particularly important to find a way that welcomes a guest when the step into the room. Under furnished or sparsely decorated rooms can make your guests feel lost and diminish the equity of the space.

Making sure you scale up your home accessories to this large space is also pertinent when designing. It is essential to get the scale right for the art, carpets, furniture and window treatments. This will allow you to create your own aesthetic.

One great way to tie the room together and add a focal point is by adding a one central light fixture such as a grandiose chandelier. Tie that together with gallery white walls and you can frame your room.

Always remember that with a large you have to keep an open concept. Everything has to ebb and flow. When you step back and look into a room, you want to be drawn in with stunning foundational details.

CHANEL’S CREATIVE DIRECTOR KARL LAGERFELD TAKES MIAMI

The world’s greatest artists and designers are always coming in and out of Miami to express themselves visually, whether it be through a gallery opening, street art, or architecture.

Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel’s iconic creative director, is in the works of starting his first ever interior design project for the Estates at Acqualina. The estates of Acqualina is an ultra-luxury residential complex in Miami’s Sunny Isles Beach. Lagerfeld will be the sole creative force behind the development’s two lobbies, rendering his superb style and detailed spirit into the interiors.

See expert from article: “[I] take great pride in knowing that the spaces I create will be such important spaces in the building,” said Lagerfeld. “Not only are they significant because they offer the first impression of the building, they are also the spaces where people come to socialize daily; they are like a common living room.”

The complex will complement the nearby Mansions at Acqualina, which debuted last fall. Slated for completion in 2020, the Estates at Acqualina will encompass two 50-story boutique towers with over 45,000 square feet of amenities, including a spa and fitness center, a restaurant overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and an ice skating rink.

We are excited to see this project bloom in the next few years bringing even more luxury and elegance to South Florida.

TIPS TO MAKE YOUR SPACE LOOK LARGER THAN LIFE

There are lots of neat tricks to make a room look bigger than it actually is. Today I am going to give you a refresher on just exactly you can make any space look larger than life! From cozy apartments to entranceways, use these tips anywhere to make the most of what you have.

  1. Choosing the perfect rug can be difficult, but when trying to make a room look larger always choose the lighter colored area rugs to help open up the space.
  2. Use home accessories to draw your gaze up high. To take advantage of the height of a room accessorize with tall floor lamps, bookshelves, and artwork as a few examples!
  3. Large mirrors will help reflect light, giving the illusion of more space. So find the right space in the room and look for a beautiful mirror that fits your design style.
  4. It is important to get out you measuring tape and choose furniture that is the correct scale for the room. This will help you avoid buying furniture that is too large for a space, which could shrink the room.
  5. Brighten up your room with light paint colors on your walls. Avoiding accent walls and keeping the room all the same light color allows there to be not visual breaks so you can focus on the brevity of the space.

Every Friday, artists hide their work around the city, and whoever finds it gets to take it home for free. To participate, the rules are simple: Make a work of art you’re willing to give away. Then leave it somewhere in the city, along with your name (artistic nickname or otherwise) and the local chapter’s information (the site has a printable QR code, or artists can include the Facebook page URL). Next, post clues on the Facebook page to help Free Art Fridays (FAF) members find your work. Members also post pictures of their finds on the page and “share” them so artists can see who took their creations home. Painters, photographers, poets — all types of artists are encouraged to participate and drop pieces off around the city.

INTERIOR DECORATION INSPIRATION OF THE WEEK: VALUE STONES

There are so many places you can find design inspiration from. It is always best to follow your gut, after reading some professional industry advice first of course. This week’s interior design inspiration is drawn from the value stone.

Stones are a popular interior design trend that is always evolving. This element brings sophistication and a natural feel to the interiors of a space. There are so many different shapes, prices, colors, and sizes it can be hard to choose!

When incorporating value stones in your home you can put them in glass or attractive container and just add water and flowers. It depends on the space your decorating but this can be a wonderfully uplifting element to a room. This simple design will leave fantastic impressions in smaller home spaces.

Make your stones unique by choosing the style and sense for both exterior and the interior of your home. Your stone choice reflects your design persona. Beauty and nature are some of the many qualities that stone decorations can bring to a space.

Keep the hand soap in a lovely container…
Throw that plastic bottle, local drugstore bought soap and get yourself and affordable yet attractive one! You can even fine great smelling soaps at Trader Joe’s and descent containers at Bed Bath and Beyond. Show you’re guests that you care about there cleanliness as much as your own.

Now let’s upgrade that kitchen…
People always underestimate the importance of a well-put together kitchen. You don’t need a fancy coffee machine and blender to up the sophistication factor, but these easy tips will help!

Napkins and condiments…
Get them! Save the paper towels for cleaning purposed and keep them under the kitchen sink. Getting yourself some actual paper napkins for place settings is an easy way to upgrade your dining room set up. Next step would be cloth napkins! Paper napkins are just the training wheels. Don’t forget to keep your salt and pepper in attractive containers as well!

You must invest in a chef’s knife…
If you have mastered your basic cooking skills your next step is getting a good chef’s knife. You won’t believe the difference it will make in the ease of prepping your meals!

It’s time to give up the days of dinner party’s with mismatched dishes and solo cups! Get yourself a set of basic white plates, matching silverware, and wine glasses, enough for at least 8 people.

Last but not least, reconsider your living space…
The main living spaces include the living room and bedroom. It’s great to keep these spaces feeling relaxed and refined at the same time! Just start with the small things!

Put in a headboard…
If you’ve moved into your new place over 2 weeks ago and your still sleeping on a mattress on the floor its time to elevate yourself with a headboard and bedframe. It’s a small addition, but it gives the your room a central focus and instantly makes it feel more elegant.

Frame you’re your favorite art…
Framing your art is one of the most common fixes to make a room look completely polished. It’s time to throw away the tacks and tape and get legit! Try serviced like Framebridge to get started. You can always go to your local art supply store to fine a simple matte frame; they’ll even help you fit the art in the right frame for you!

Get yourself some houseplants…
Bring life into your living space by bringing the outside in, and some interiorscaping. Consider a jade, aloe, or spider plant, all of which are hardy; Easter lilies, snake plants, or a Peperomia plant are great choices, too.

DESIGN TRENDS THAT CAN MAKE YOUR SPACE SEEM DATED

I love sharing the latest trends and creative initiatives in the interior design space, but today I am going to share the opposite. Trends come and go so often through out the years that sometimes it can be easy to forget when a trend has officially ended.

Look back at the days when carpeted walls, spa baths and waterbeds were loved. These trends faded and the designs were changed. Today I am going to share with you which trends are on their way out!

European-style laundry
A lot of homes already have a traditional-style laundry room installed. Homeowners want to avoid wasting space, so they convert it to European-style. This however comes as a shortfall. Without the ability to have storage in your laundry, somewhere to have your dirty clothes, ironing board and ironed clothes can create clutter in your home. We like to keep things clean and simple, so out with the trend and let’s back to basics.

Hexagon tile
In 2015 the hexagon shaped tile was everything, from fun, to form fitting, it was a hot trend of the year. Now the overuse of the hexagon has really dated this trend fast. Too much tiles should be avoid and simple is smart. Hot tip, keep any tiling in the kitchen and bathrooms.

In-wall coffee machine
There is a definite trend of concealing appliances in order to streamline a kitchen, but not all appliances look great tucked away. Expose that coffee or espresso machine and be proud to start brewing. Away goes the trend of in-wall coffee machines!
