THIS YEAR’S ART BASEL IS THE BIGGEST EVE

It’s my favorite time of the year!

No, I’m not talking about the holidays (although those aren’t bad either). This is the weekend when Miami takes over the world.

Art Basel is here, and the extravaganza just keeps getting better.

As you know, Basel is often a chance for me to indulge my love of art, both for my own collection and for our high end interior design clients who want to use their homes to express their exquisite taste.

This year the Fair is offering $3 billion in art…the biggest ever.

If you see me there, definitely come over and say hi!

INTERIOR DESIGN ACROSS THE POND

It’s official…interior design is hotter than ever! And not just in Miami.

One of the most popular new TV shows in the UK is The Great British Interior Design Challenge, and it is truly fantastic!

The show depicts amateur interior designers traveling across Britain, sampling different locations and styles of architecture, and then competing to improve what they find.

Not only is it a smorgasbord of different looks for any true fan of interior design…it’s great reality TV.

MIAMI IS THE NEW HOLLYWOOD

You know that a city is hot when anything having to do with the Silver Screen heads its way from Hollywood.

That’s what’s happening to Miami right now.

In this case, it’s a series of galleries and showrooms popping up offering high end mid-20th century furnishings…the kind normally associated with the Golden Age of Hollywood.

A perfect complement to any interior design project.

HIGH END INTERIOR DESIGN ANATOMY – PART 2

On last week’s episode of DesignTV With Steven G., we showed you the end result of all the nuts and bolts of high end interior design we usually focus on.

AN INTERIOR DESIGN PRODIGY

As you probably know by now, we love to highlight young interior designers who do amazing things, whether they’re in Miami or elsewhere.

This week in Kansas City, interior design student Cassandra Stanley won the International Interior Design Association’s Design Wars competition for the second year in a row. Virtually unheard of!

Congratulations to Ms. Stanley — we can’t wait to see what comes next!

HOW HIGH END INTERIOR DESIGN GOES WRONG

We always say that truly luxurious, high end interior design should look like the homeowner is just someone with really good taste. However, there’s another side to the story.

Many interior decorators try to give a place the lived-in appearance by simply going around and finding expensive art, knickknacks, and furniture to fill a space. Unfortunately, this all too often creates a feeling of clutter rather than luxury and taste.

The antidote is adopt a policy that in great interior design, form should always follow function.

That’s the subject of a fantastic article in Freshome this week.

Over the next three episodes, I’ll be walking through one of our latest finished jobs at the St. Regis in Bal Harbor (near Miami) to show you what luxury interior design can look like when it all comes together.

TOP NOTCH INTERIOR DECORATION TIPS FROM A NEW HGTV STAR

I love it when talented young interior designers and decorators step into the spotlight. Not only does it show what a bright future our profession has, but it keeps us all inspired by their great ideas.

Danielle Colding is definitely an interior designer who’s not short on great ideas. As the latest winner of HGTV’s reality show “Design Star,” she’s been getting lots of press lately, which she’s been using to spread some really high quality interior design information on everything from picking the right sized rug for a room to using cabinets to brighten up a room.
